Newsletter & Calendars: May 2019

May has arrived and summer is on the horizon!  This month, we're looking forward to offering new classes, events, and programs, while also planning for Summer Reading in June.

As always, we have brand new flyers, calendars, and newsletters to share with our patrons.  For our adults, we have lots of fun crafts planned for May:  we're creating Mother's Day Shadow Boxes on May 2, fashioning book bouquets with recycled materials on May 7, and painting succulents and cacti on May 25.  We're also playing bingo on May 17 and exploring new facets of genealogy on May 24, as well as watching movies on May 4 (The Boy and the Beast), May 8 (Blazing the Western Trail), and May 30 (Top Hat).

The Friends of the Bristol Public Library will meet on Monday, May 20, at 6:00 p.m. to discuss their upcoming book sale from June 7 to June 9.  They will be sorting and processing books, volunteering for book sale shifts, and planning out the book sale.  They are always excited to have volunteers and visitors, so if you are interested in helping out with the book sale, please feel free to drop in during their monthly meeting.

Additionally, if you are interested in joining the BPL FOL, please make sure to fill out an application form by visiting the Bristol Public Library or complete a copy of the application online by visiting:  https://forms.gle/vHRLxbpauvAR6mWY8.  As an added bonus, new members who join by or on June 6, will have the chance to enjoy the Friends Only Book Sale from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on June 6.  The membership fee for the BPL FOL is only $10 for the entire year!

The teens and tweens also have some wonderful new events planned for May.  This month, the teens will be celebrating Star Wars during their Fandom Saturday on May 4 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. by playing games, participating in Nerf battles, designing lightsabers, and more.  The D&D Guild will also continue to meet on May 2 and May 16.  (Registration is required to join the guild, so please contact Ms. Jaden at 276-821-6192 or jaden@bristol-library.org.)

The Gaming Club will be playing Rocket League, Pokken Tournament, Minecraft, The Wonderful 101, and Super Smash Bros, while the Teen Book Club will pick up Darius the Great is Not Okay by Adib Khorram and the Tweens will read The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau.  Special events include "Minecraft Madness" on May 15, movie nights on May 20 (Pan) and May 22 (Sherlock Holmes), and board games on May 29.

The Children's Department will be especially busy during May as they prepare for their Scholastic Book Fair, starting on May 20, and their Summer Reading Program, which begins on June 3.  Storytime, as always, will be held on Mondays at 11:30 a.m. and Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m.  They will also be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, during Children's Book Week (April 29 to May 5) and decorating spaceships for Summer Reading on May 8 and May 9 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

During May, the Avoca Branch Library will have storytime on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and the Kids' Classic Book Club with Charlotte's Web by E.B. White on Thursdays at 4:00 p.m.  A special "Game Hour" will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, so make sure to drop in and enjoy an afternoon of free, family-friendly gaming.  For more information, please contact the Avoca Branch at 423-968-9663.
