Bingo at the BPL!

Join the Bristol Public Library on Friday, September 7, at 2:30 p.m. for Bingo at the BPL! The library will have free bingo games and snacks available for all participants. Plus, they’ll be giving away small prizes to a handful of lucky bingo winners! No registration is necessary, simply visit the library anytime between 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to take advantage of free bingo.

Classic Movie Corner: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

This month, the Bristol Public Library is offering a free movie showing of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) as part of our ongoing Classic Movie Corner.  Drop in at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, to take advantage of the library's monthly free movie--and, of course, pick up a bag of free popcorn!

Butch Cassidy (played by Paul Newman) and the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) are leaders of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang:  Butch is the brains, and Sundance is the brawn.  Although the west is becoming civilized, Butch and Sundance aren't about to let their lucrative careers as criminals go.  But when a train robbery goes wrong, Butch and Sundance find themselves being pursued by a relentless posse--and Butch decides it's high time to they skedaddle to Bolivia.

"Should Women Vote?: Women's Suffrage and Voting Rights with Stewart Harris

Stewart Harris, creator and host of "Your Weekly Constitutional," will be speaking at the Bristol Public Library on September 18, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. "Your Weekly Constitutional" is produced at WETS 89.5 FM in Johnson City and airs on several NPR affiliate stations nationwide, including locally on WETS and WEHC. Harris, who currently works as an associate professor at Lincoln Memorial University, will be visiting during Constitution Week (September 17-23) for “Should Women Vote?: Women’s Suffrage and Voting Rights.”

The Bristol Public Library, in partnership with the Fort Chiswell DAR, will be offering this program free of charge in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room at the Bristol Public Library on 701 Goode Street in Bristol, Virginia. All library patrons and community members are invited to attend. No registration is required, simply visit the library on September 18 at 6:00 p.m. to meet and speak with Stewart Harris.

During our next Write Here meeting, we're expecting a special guest from Jan Carol Publishing!  On September 4 at 6:00 p.m., Janie Jessee from Jan Carol Publishing will be available to answer questions about the publishing process and self-publishing tips.  If you are interested in having your work published, definitely drop in for our publishing workshop next week!

MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival

Image may contain: 3 peopleIn 2018, the MANHATTAN SHORT received over 1,500 entries from 73 countries from which 9 finalists were chosen. Between September 27 and October 7, these nine short films will be available for viewing in over 300 cities on six continents—and the judges for these films will be you, the audience! Every attendee will be given a ballot to vote for the best short film and actor/actress at the conclusion of the show. Votes will be tallied at MANHATTAN SHORT headquarters in New York City and winners will be announced at manhattanshort.com on Monday, October 8, at 10:00 a.m.

This year, the Bristol Public Library will be participating in the 21st Annual MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival, starting the first week of October. The library will be offering free screenings of these short films on Monday, October 1 at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, October 3 at 5:30 p.m. We will also have encore showings on Friday, October 5 at 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. All movie attendees will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite movie and actor/actress, which will be submitted and tallied with other voters from across the world.

Creative & Crafty: Crumple Dyeing

We're making tie-dye shirts and crumple dyeing today at 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  If you are registered for our class, please make sure to bring your own t-shirt or other compatible fabric!  We do encourage participants to bring fabrics that are 100% cotton, as these work better with our dyes; we also ask that participants wear clothing that is appropriate for dyeing, since we will not have aprons available.

BPL Anime Theater: Cowboy Bebop (the series)

Join the Bristol Public Library on Saturday, September 1, at 2:30 p.m. for a special showing of Cowboy Bebop, the series. We'll show the first five episodes of the series and, as always, we'll have Japanese snacks and popcorn available for all movie attendees.

Spike Spiegel and his partner, Jet Black, are "Cowboys," registered bounty hunters who chase criminals and bring them in for a reward. Eventually, they're joined by Faye Valentine, a professional con artist with amnesia; Edward Wong, an eccentric girl, who is frighteningly skilled at hacking computers; and Ein, a genetically engineered Welsh Corgi. They live and work aboard the Bebop, hunting criminals and, whether they like it or not, confronting the events from their past.

Rated TV-14; approximately 150 minutes.

Great American Novel Book Club

No automatic alt text available.On Friday, August 31, the Great American Novel Book Club will be meeting to read Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Huston. We’ll meet in the downstairs area of Blackbird Bakery at 56 Piedmont Avenue at 6:30 p.m.

The Great American Novel Book Club meets on the final Friday of each month, and readers decide our new location after each meeting. Readers will be responsible for acquiring their own copy of the book each month; however, they are more than welcome to request a copy from the library. We’re happy to help you find what you need!

On Tuesday, August 14, the IRS will be hosting a public forum on taxpayer service options and virtual services available at the Bristol Public Library on 701 Goode Street in Bristol, Virginia, starting at 6:00 p.m.  This public forum is an opportunity for taxpayers to voice their ideas and concerns, as well as help shape the future of IRS services in Bristol, TN/VA.  They will host a live demonstration of IRS virtual services, which will be available at the Bristol Public Library.

Registration is not required to participate; however, the IRS encourages potential attendees to RSVP by sending an email to officecomments@irs.gov.  Additional comments, questions, and feedback can be submitted to the same email address.

Creative & Crafty: Crumple Dyeing

No automatic alt text available.Although summer is winding down, the Bristol Public Library still has one last summer craft before the weather begins to cool off! Join us on Saturday, August 25, at 2:00 p.m. for our most colorful Creative & Crafty project yet: crumple dyeing!

During this class, registered participants will have the opportunity to create their own, unique tie-dye creation using low-immersion dyeing and “crumpling” techniques. Our class will happen whether rain or shine, but, if weather permits, we’ll host our Crumple Dyeing class outside!


Registration is required. Please note, our crumple dyeing project is completely free to attend; however, registered participants will be responsible for bringing their own t-shirt or other fabric for dyeing. The library will provide gloves, dye, and other items for the dyeing process, but we will not have t-shirts available. Participants are also encouraged to bring fabrics that are 100% cotton only, as these work better with dyes.

Creative & Crafty: Floral Canvas Class

Join us on Saturday, August 18, at 2:00 p.m. for our Creative & Crafty:  Floral Canvas Class.  For this class, registered participants will have the opportunity to choose between two canvases--a pretty bouquet of purple hydrangeas, or a cluster of morning glories on a barn wall--and craft a completely unique portrait of their very own.  Our class is being offered for $5 per person per canvas; all canvases, paint, supplies, and instruction will be provided with payment.

PC Class: Social Media (Avoca Edition)

Thanks to the Training Opportunities for the Public (TOP) Grant, which is provided through the Tennessee State Library and Archives, the Jones Creativity Center at the Bristol Public Library will be offering free monthly computer training labs and classes to the public.  These classes will assist participants in learning everything from basic computer skills to working with advance settings and programs to creating a website from scratch with Wordpress.

During August, the JCC will be offering a special class on "Social Media."  Interested students will have the opportunity to learn more about social media, including how it works, how to safely navigate different social media applications, and how to use social media on various devices.

The Bristol Public Library is offering a free showing of Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), starting at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8.  Free popcorn and water will be available to all movie attendees!

Daniel Hillard (played by Robin Williams) loves his kids, but, after a bitter divorce, he doesn't get to spend as much time with them as he would like.  In order to stay close to his kids, Daniel disguises himself as the sweet, Scottish housekeeper, Mrs. Doubtfire.  But when his ex-wife, Miranda (Sally Field), meets Stu Dunemeyer (Pierce Brosnan), Daniels disguise as Mrs. Doubtfire is soon put to the test as he grapples with Miranda's budding relationship and his own uncertain future.

BPL Anime Theater: The Castle of Cagliostro

Join the Bristol Public Library on Saturday, August 4, at 2:30 p.m. for a free showing of Hayao Miyazaki’s Lupin the Third:  The Castle of Cagliostro (1979).  Although the BPL Anime Theater will be featured on a new day and time, the library will still offer free showings of favorite anime series and movies, as well as offer popcorn and snacks to all movie attendees.


Lupin III is a master thief.  Renowned for his ability to steal anything from anyone, he’s got his sights set on a cool million held at the national casino—except, once he has the money in his hands, he discovers it’s fake!  With his partner-in-crime Jigen, Lupin heads to the remote European duchy of Cagliostro to uncover the source of the counterfeit money.  But what starts as a simple quest to uncover a counterfeiting ring turns into a high-flying adventure with swashbuckling swordsmen, damsels in distress, evil counts, and gun-toting femme fatales.


Rated PG-13; 100 minutes.
