The Great American Novel Book Club: The Catcher in the Rye

Classic Movie Corner: Mary Poppins

This month, we're showing Mary Poppins for our Classic Movie Corner.  Join us on July 26 for a special presentation of this classic Disney musical!


Starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, Mary Poppins is a family-favorite musical involving magic, fantastical adventures, and, of course, toe-tapping songs.  When Mary Poppins (Andrews) drops in and becomes nanny to the Banks children, Jane and Michael, she takes the kids on the adventure of a lifetime--and helps them reconnect with their overworked father and distracted mother.

Classic Music Karaoke

Write Here: A Writing Club for Current and Future Authors


Write Here is a writing club organized by the Bristol Public Library for readers and writers who are or aspire to become authors. Everyone is welcome to attend, write, share, and discuss. Meetings and workshops are fun and informal, and completely free to enjoy.

BPL Anime Theater: The Castle of Cagliostro

Join the Bristol Public Library on Saturday, August 4, at 2:30 p.m. for a free showing of Hayao Miyazaki’s Lupin the Third:  The Castle of Cagliostro (1979).  Although the BPL Anime Theater will be featured on a new day and time, the library will still offer free showings of favorite anime series and movies, as well as offer popcorn and snacks to all movie attendees.


Lupin III is a master thief.  Renowned for his ability to steal anything from anyone, he’s got his sights set on a cool million held at the national casino—except, once he has the money in his hands, he discovers it’s fake!  With his partner-in-crime Jigen, Lupin heads to the remote European duchy of Cagliostro to uncover the source of the counterfeit money.  But what starts as a simple quest to uncover a counterfeiting ring turns into a high-flying adventure with swashbuckling swordsmen, damsels in distress, evil counts, and gun-toting femme fatales.


Rated PG-13; 100 minutes.

We'll also be raffling off a few commemorative fans from TMS Anime for the brand new Lupin III, Part 5.  Make sure to sign up for the raffle as soon as you arrive!

The Great American Novel Book Club: The Catcher in the Rye

On July 27, the Great American Novel Book Club will be meeting to read The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.  We'll be meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Blackbird Bakery on 56 Piedmont Avenue in Bristol, Virginia.

The Great American Novel Book Club meets on the final Friday of each month, and readers decide our new location after each meeting.  Readers will be responsible for acquiring their own copy of the book each month; however, they are more than welcome to request a copy from the library.  We're happy to help you find what you need!

Join the Bristol Public Library today at 5:30 p.m. for a special presentation on the geology of Southern Appalachia presented by Jeremy Stout, manager of the Steele Creek Park Nature Center. Jeremy will delve into geology and discuss common--and not so common--rocks found in the region, as well as answer questions about curious rock formations and rocks found at Steele Creek Park.

If you didn't have the opportunity to join us for Creative & Crafty:  Paper Quilling Woodland Critters, make sure to drop in after July 9 to pick up a paper quilling kit.  We'll have limited numbers of paper quilling kits with instructions available in the Jones Creativity Center.  Pick up a kit, take it home, and work on your own paper critter!

BPL Anime Theater: Summer Wars

This month, make sure to drop in for our BPL Anime Theater in the large meeting room upstairs.  We're watching Summer Wars (2009) on July 5 at 5:30 p.m.  We'll have popcorn, Japanese snacks, and water for movie attendees!

Kenji is a genius with mathematics.  Although he very nearly went on to represent Japan in an international math competition, he's just your average junior in high school:  He spends too much time online in the virtual world of "OZ" and he struggles to speak to his crush.  But when Kenji receives a text message that appears to be a complicated math problem and then solves it, he inadvertently puts a dangerous artificial intelligence program in a position to take over the real world.  With help from his new found friends, his only hope is to stop the AI before it completely destroys OZ and leeches into the real world.

The Road to Home Ownership with Regions Bank

A representative from Regions Bank will be on hand to discuss the pitfalls and perils of mortgage applications, the pros and cons of owning a home, as well as answering questions about mortgage basics.

This seminar is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Creative & Crafty: Paper Quilling Woodland Critters

Image may contain: shoesThe Bristol Public Library is offering another free summer Creative & Crafty project! Join us on July 7 at 2:30 p.m. for a sneak peek of our paper quilling kits and a free class on how to create your very own woodland critter.

No registration is required, simply drop in and pick up a kit to learn how to create either a frog, an owl, a fox, a bird, or a rabbit.


Limited numbers and colors of kits will be available for each woodland critter. Starting on July 9, remaining paper quilling kits will be available in the Jones Creativity Center to pick up. We'll have kits available until we run out. Participants can create their critter at the library or take their project home!
