Classic Movie Corner: Singin' in the Rain

The Bristol Public Library is pleased to announce that we're showing Singin' in the Rain (1952) on June 28 as part of our ongoing Classic Movie Corner!

Considered the best movie musical of all time by the American Film Institute, Singin' in the Rain is set in 1927--a time when the film industry is transitioning from silent movies to "talkies"--with Don Lockwood (played by Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), an on-screen romantic duo who are considered the best in the business.  Although they can't stand one another off-screen, Don and Lina are working on a new project to transform their latest picture into a musical.  The only problem:  Lina can't sing.  When Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) is brought in to provide Lina with a voice, Don slowly begins to fall in love with her.  But Lina, who enjoys the limelight her fictional relationship with Don brings, isn't about to give him up.

Rated G; 103 minutes.

Advanced Genealogy: Preserving Family Recipes

Food has always had the unique capability of connecting people, just like family recipes can connect generations with the same simple ingredients used fifty years ago. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find a way to understand and preserve old recipes and, more importantly, hold on to the memories associated with a meal.

On June 13, the Bristol Public Library will be offering a special genealogy program specifically on preserving old family recipes and learning how to document family history using recipe cards, clippings, and online recipes. We'll discuss how to preserve fading and crumbling recipes, how to compile recipes and encourage family members to share their favorites, and how to unearth forgotten or lost recipes.

Space is limited, so registration is required for our genealogy class. To learn more about Preserving Family Recipes and how to register, please contact Ambrea at the Bristol Public Library at 276-645-8780 or ajohnson@bristol-library.org.

BPL Anime Theater: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

The BPL Anime Theater meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month to watch and discuss anime movies, manga, and television shows. We’ll also have popcorn and snacks available for our attendees!

On June 7, we’re offering a free showing of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006).

In The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Makoto is having a horrible day. She was late for class, flunked a test, had a terrible mishap on campus and, just when she thought her day couldn’t get worse, her brakes give out on her bike, sending her careening in front of a passing train—and that’s when Makoto discovers she can leap backward through time. Suddenly, tests become a piece of cake and embarrassing situations are a thing of the past and she can enjoy her favorite meals whenever she wants! Unfortunately for her friends and family, her time traveling is causing significant problems and, if Makoto wants to stop something truly bad from happening, she’ll have to find a way to fix the timeline before it’s too late.

Rated PG-13; 98 minutes.

Library Movie: The Producers

To celebrate the start of summer reading at the Bristol Public Library, we're offering a free showing of The Producers (2005) on June 5 at 5:30 p.m.

Starring Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, and Uma Thurman, The Producers is a musical comedy about two producers—Max Bialystock (Lane) and Leo Bloom (Broderick)—who cook up a get-rich-quick scheme to put on the world’s worst show. With the help of loopy bombshell Ulla (Thurman), manic Franz Liebkind (Will Ferrell), and outrageously flamboyant Roger DeBris (Gary Beach), Max and Leo will create a perfectly horrible Broadway show and pocket a boatload of cash—after all, what could go wrong?

Rated PG-13; 134 minutes.
