Creative & Crafty: Spring Mesh Wreaths

Continuing our spring Creative & Crafty events, we’re creating mesh wreaths!  Starting at 2:00 p.m. on March 31, the Bristol Public Library will be hosting a special class on making a spring-themed mesh wreath.

Registered participants will be supplied with a 14-inch wire wreath frame, decorative mesh, and assorted decorations to create a one-of-a-kind spring wreath to hang on their door.  The cost for the class is $5 per person; however, participants will be provided with all supplies needed to create a customizable spring wreath.

Space is limited, so registration is required.  To register, please contact the Bristol Public Library at 276-645-8780 or ajohnson@bristol-library.org.  Limited numbers of colors and decorations will be provided, but if you have a specific set of colors or decorations you would like to use for your wreath, please feel free to bring them with you.  If you bring your own supplies, we will provide the wire frame and waive our usual fee!

People Incorporated will be offering free tax preparation services at the Bristol Public Library starting on Saturday, February 3, 2018.  VITA Volunteers will be available on Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., until April 14.

Don't forget to bring the following items to begin your tax prep paperwork:
  • Photo ID.  For married filing jointly, both spouses must be present with photo ID.
  • Voided check for direct deposit.
  • Social security cards or Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN).
  • All income statements, such as W-2, W2-P, W-2G, 1099, etc. for you and all dependents.
  • Expense documents:  dependent care, college tuition, student loan statements, home mortgage interest, property tax statements, alimony paid or received, etc.
  • Total paid to daycare provider and provider's tax ID number.
  • Proof of health insurance:  insurance card, Medicare or Medicaid Card, 1095-A, 1095-D, or 1095-C.

Bingo at the BPL!

It’s time for Bingo at the BPL!

We had so much fun playing bingo throughout January and February that we decided to make it a monthly tradition. Join us on April 7 for Bingo at the BPL, starting at 3:00 p.m. We’ll play several games of bingo and we’ll have some snacks available for all participants. Plus, we’ll even have small prizes available for our winners.

It’s going to be a great afternoon for free, family-friendly fun, so make sure to drop in!

Avoca Branch Library Spring Book Sale


It’s time for the Avoca Branch Library’s biannual book sale!

Sponsored by the Friends of the Avoca Branch Library, Avoca’s spring book sale kicks off on Thursday, April 5 at 10:00 a.m. and continues through the rest of the weekend.  It only happens during their hours of operation, so make sure to stop by and pick up a new book or any number of nifty little gifts and goodies, before they’re all gone!

Poetry Reading by Michael Czarnecki

Michael Czarnecki, a poet and small press publisher, is hosting a free poetry reading on April 5 at 3:00 p.m. at the Bristol Public Library.  Czarnecki will read original poems, tell stories, and share his latest books, and he will offer an Open Reading for local poets and authors.

Everyone is welcome to participate and visiting poets are encouraged to share!

PC Class: Office Productivity (Avoca Edition)


Thanks to the Training Opportunities for the Public (TOP) Grant, which is provided through the Tennessee State Library and Archives, the Jones Creativity Center will be offering monthly computer training labs and class to the public. These classes will assist in learning everything from basic computer skills to working with advanced settings and programs to creating your own website with Wordpress.

This month, the JCC will be offering a special class on “Office Productivity,” a free class on Office software and other options, on March 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the JCC and March 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Avoca Branch Library.

Classic Movie Corner: Rio Bravo

Saddle up the horses, it's time for another Classic Movie Corner with Rio Bravo (1959):


Starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, and Walter Brennan, Rio Bravo tells the story of Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne) as he tries to protect his small town from murderer Joe Burdette and his obscenely wealthy brother, Nathan.  But after his close friend Pat Wheeler is gunned down in the street, Sheriff Chance is left with only a ragtag band of heroes:  Stumpy (Brennan), an elderly deputy with a bad leg; Dude (Martin), a sharpshooter who always hits his mark when he's sober; and Colorado Ryan (Nelson), a young ranch hand who used to work for Wheeler.

Our free movie presentation begins at 5:30 p.m. in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room, so be ready for a rip-roaring good time.  Popcorn and water will be made available to all movie attendees.

Creative & Crafty: Glass Jars & Bottles


No automatic alt text available.The Bristol Public Library is offering a free Creative & Crafty project on April 4 at 6:00 p.m.  We’ll be decorating recycled glass jars using glitter, paint, paper, and ModPodge.  The glasses and jars will be all different shapes and sizes, and availability of decorations will vary; however, if you have a specific project in mind, feel free to bring your own supplies.  This project is great for all ages, easy to complete, and free to attend!

Creative & Crafty: March Canvas Class


Hop on in to the Bristol Public Library and join us for our latest Creative & Crafty project on March 28 at 5:30 p.m.  We’re celebrating spring the best way we know how with a canvas class!  Participants will have the opportunity to select a spring or Easter-themed portrait to give their own personal flair.

The cost for this canvas class will be $10 per person; however, this will cover all the needed supplies, including canvas, paint, brushes, and instruction.  Participants are welcome to bring their own canvas, and we will waive the standard fee for our class.

Tales from the Moonshine Trade with Kathy Shearer

Kathy Shearer, author of Tales from the Moonshine Trade, will be speaking at the Bristol Public Library on tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room.  Shearer will discuss her book and share stories with the public on local history, including Prohibition and its impact on northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia.  She’ll also have copies of her book available for purchase.

Shearer’s visit coincides with the installation of a new gallery exhibition at the Bristol Public Library titled Teetotalers & Moonshiners:  Prohibition in Virginia, Distilled, a traveling exhibition from the Library of Virginia presented with support from Virginia ABC and the Virginia Distillers Association.  Teetotalers & Moonshiners will be available and open to the public in the Virgie R. Fleenor Gallery during the library’s hours of operation, until April 28, 2018.

Avoca Branch Friends of the Library


If you're interested in helping out your local library, make sure to join the Avoca Branch Friends of the Library.  Join a community of book and library lovers, and spend time discussing future events and upcoming library programs.

The Avoca Branch Friends of the Library meet on the first Monday of the month, unless otherwise noted, at 12:00 noon at the Avoca Branch.  This month, they'll meet on April 2.

No registration is necessary, just drop in to learn more about the awesome opportunities available to help the library and enjoy an afternoon with library friends.

BPL Anime Theater: Tenchi Muyo! The Movie

The Bristol Public Library is offering a free showing of Tenchi Muyo! The Movie (1996) on April 5 at 5:30 p.m.  The BPL Anime Theater meets on the first Thursday of the month in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room to watch anime and related manga—and munch on Japanese snacks!

Tenchi is not your average teenager:  he’s friends with an intergalactic criminal, a Galaxy Police officer, and members of the Jurai royal family.  He’s always drawn into different adventures and hijinks—but, this time, he may be in real danger!  When a merciless criminal named Kain escapes from subspace and demolishes the Galaxy Police headquarters, Tenchi and his friends are put in peril as Kain turns his gaze on the earth.

Rated PG-13.  95 minutes.

Teetotalers & Moonshiners: Prohibition in Virginia, Distilled

Teetotalers & Moonshiners:  Prohibition in Virginia, Distilled, a traveling exhibition from the Library of Virginia, tells the story of Virginia Prohibition and its legacy through an exciting exhibition and associated programming.  The exhibition addresses the important and long-lasting effects of Prohibition on the commonwealth and America, including its effects as a social reform movement, its costs, and its legacy in the creation of NASCAR and the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Beginning Genealogy

Don't forget, we're offering our Beginning Genealogy class today at 3:00 p.m.!


Designed to help new and experienced genealogists, Beginning Genealogy is an introductory class on both online research and book resources.  Participants will be able to learn more about using Ancestry and Heritage Quest, library resources, and creating family trees.  Kristin will be teaching this free educational program and offering tips on how to best navigate genealogy online, as well as printed sources.

Creative & Crafty: Shamrocks (Avoca Branch edition)


It’s very nearly St. Patrick’s Day, and we’re ready to celebrate the season by painting shamrocks at the Avoca Branch Library on March 10!  We’ll have shamrock templates available and you can customize your canvas how you like.  We’ll also have ribbons to add to the canvas, so you can hang it on your door.

Space is limited, so registration is required for our event.  The cost for our class will be $5 per person; however, this fee will pay for all needed supplies, including paint, brushes, canvases, ribbon, and templates.  To sign up for our class, please contact the Avoca Branch Library at 423-968-9663 or ajohnson@bristol-library.org.  Please note:  We will not be taking reservations through our Facebook event.  If you wish to join, please give us a call!

BPL Book Club

The BPL Book Club will be meeting on March 15 at 6:00 p.m. in the Frances Kegley Conference Room.  This month, we'll be reading and discussing The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.  We'll pick up our next book and, as always, we'll have Blackbird Bakery treats available!

Creative & Crafty: No-Bake Cookies

Love cookies, but hate the hassle of baking?

Then join us for "Creative & Crafty:  No-Bake Cookies" today starting at 3:00 p.m.  For this project, we'll be making easy, no-bake recipes like Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies and Caramel Crunch Cookies.  Both recipes are easy to follow and take no more than 20 minutes to make.

VITA Tax Prep: March 3, 2018

People Incorporated will be offering free tax preparation services at the Bristol Public Library starting on Saturday, February 3, 2018.  VITA Volunteers will be available on Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Don't forget to bring the following items to begin your tax prep paperwork:
  • Photo ID.  For married filing jointly, both spouses must be present with photo ID.
  • Voided check for direct deposit.
  • Social security cards or Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN).
  • All income statements, such as W-2, W2-P, W-2G, 1099, etc. for you and all dependents.
  • Expense documents:  dependent care, college tuition, student loan statements, home mortgage interest, property tax statements, alimony paid or received, etc.
  • Total paid to daycare provider and provider's tax ID number.

Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration!


Join the Avoca Branch Library today for their Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration!  They’ll have books, storytime, snacks, and fun seussical crafts, as well as a free giveaway.  To participate in their drawing for a $25 gift certificate, visitors must show their library card or sign up for a library card at the Avoca Branch Library.

Make sure to drop in for a free, family-friendly day of fun on March 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Beginning Genealogy

We're excited to announce that we are offering Beginning Genealogy on Thursday, March 8 at 3:00 p.m. in the Jones Creativity Center.

Designed to help new and experienced genealogists, Beginning Genealogy is an introductory class on both online research and book resources.  Participants will be able to learn more about using Ancestry and Heritage Quest, library resources, and creating family trees.  Kristin will be teaching this free educational program and offering tips on how to best navigate genealogy online, as well as printed sources.

BPL Anime Theater: Ghost in the Shell

The Bristol Public Library is offering a free showing of The Ghost in the Shell (1996) today at 5:30 p.m. as part of our continuing BPL Anime Theater.  No registration is required, simply drop in and enjoy the show!  We'll discuss anime and related manga, and we'll munch on Japanese snacks.  Popcorn and water will also be available for all movie attendees.

Motoko Kusanagi is a federal agent, an elite cybernetic officer who deals with criminals that no one else can seem to catch--and she's been given her most difficult case yet:  a computer criminal know only as the Puppet Master.  A data-thief who can hack into the minds of unsuspecting humans and cyborgs, the Puppet Master steals sensitive information and commits crimes using cyborgs as his marionettes.  Motoko, along with her partners Bateau and Togusa, must stop the Puppet Master before he claims another victim.
