CCC Boys of Bristol

Michigan based author/songwriter Bill Jamerson will present a music and storytelling program about the Civilian Conservation Corps on November 20 at 6:00 p.m. in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room.  Dressed in uniform, Jamerson will share stories about the CCC, read excerpts from his book, show a short video from his PBS film, and sing original songs with his guitar.

The CCC was a federal work program created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the midst of the Great Depression.  During its nine-year run, more than 76,000 men served in the CCC throughout cities in Tennessee and Virginia, including Bristol.  Jamerson will explore the history of the CCC and its impact on every day living, especially in rural areas where the corps helped plant trees, built bridges and dams, and constructed roadways.

Jamerson will also talk about many of the interesting CCC enrollees he's met over the years, and discuss his research into the CCC.  Patrons and visitors are encouraged to bring CCC photos and memorabilia to this free presentation.  For more information, please call the Bristol Public Library at 276-645-8780 or visit Jamerson's website at billjamerson.com.

For our meeting on November 2, we're showing Steamboy (2004).  Starring Anna Paquin, Patrick Stewart, and Alfred Molina, Steamboy is a fascinating, steampunk adventure of epic proportions.

Rei (Paquin) is a young inventor living in Manchester.  The son and grandson of inventors, Rei has a very big legacy behind him; not to mention, he's just come into possession of his grandfather's (Stewart) invention:  the "Steam Ball."  Seemingly filled with limitless power, the Steam Ball is an incredible invention in the right hands--and a dangerous weapon in the wrong ones.

Meet Jack: Candy Guessing Contest

It's almost time for Halloween, which means it's time to giveaway some candy!

Starting on October 1 to October 13, we're hosting a candy guessing contest.  To participate, simply fill out one of our official contest cards and tell us how much candy you think is in the jar.  The participant who guesses the correct or closest number, wins and gets to keep our Halloween mascot "Jack" (who just happens to be filled with candy).

Our contest is free to enter and open to all ages.  Participants are required to fill out a contest card in order to participate; however, no further registration is necessary.  If you're interested in learning more, please contact the Bristol Public Library at 276-645-8780 or pay a visit to the reference desk to meet Jack and submit your guess.
